I once read "truth is indeed a luxury, but it's absence brings about the most abject poverty." Now an abject apology reflects a persons sincerity and shows them to be excessively humble. The 'abject poverty' brought about by the lack of truth shows no hope of improvement or relief. I could accept an abject apology and possibly 'forgive and forget' but lying is disgusting and hurtful. It is deceitful and you are left wondering why you weren't worth the truth. So, lying leads to a most miserable outcome which rarely leads to an optimistic future. Don't surround yourself in unnecessary poverty when you know you deserve better, and can be provided with the luxury.
I think its absence and the 'poverty' it leads you to acquire leave you in a state of submerged vulnerability. But you have to recognise your worth and not let others affect you in such a way. You may heal with scar tissue there for reminders. But you can move on because truth is a luxury which everyone must indulge themselves in.
